School psychologists undertake to observe and guide the pupils, to identify and support children going through a situation of school failure or suffering from emotional or relational disorders. They work with the teaching staff, the parents, the pupils as with all members of the educational community (nurses, school doctors, therapists, learning support teachers, educational advisors…), and with the external operators.
School psychologists main functions include : the prevention, the evaluation and the intervention.
The preventive work applies to different areas and different levels, always in conjunction with the educational staff, and in accordance with the institutional projects.
Subjects to take into consideration may be :
• violence at school
• addictions
• health education
• environmental respect
• work methods
• relationship with others…At the evaluation level, school psychologists’ work consists of an analysis of all difficulties encountered by the pupil or the class. In this respect, a number of different tools may be used, as observation, questionnaires or meetings.
Overall assessments allowing to evaluate the level of the pupil will not be effectuated by the school psychological service, but the parents can refer to the list of specialized centers available.
At the intervention level, an active listening and counseling is proposed to pupils, teaching staff and parents.Learning support
